Thought I would make a topic for the first tropical depression of the Atlantic this year.....well south Atlantic that is.

I asked Lyons about how often something like this occurs:

"Only the second time in our satellite history dating back to about 1963 or so. The first was hurricane "Catarina" in 2004 in the same area and same month actuallly struck land near Santa Catarina (hence the unofficial name) with 100 mph winds. Many homes were damagaged, only 2 known deaths as far as I remember.

Hurricane Xeta formed in January 2006 in the north atlantic.

This storm is happening in the peak of the southern hemisphere's "hurricane season." The waters down there are warmest February through April.

Although this update is a little old, I found out that Invest 90Q did become a tropical storm through satellite measurements.  The Brazilian government gave it an unofficial name of Anita although there is no official name list for the South Atlantic.
