What is HiRAD?

What is TWC HD?

Q: When was The Weater Channel founded?

A: The Weather Channel was founded on May 2, 1982.

Q: What is a STAR?

A: A STAR is the unit that brings you your local forecast. It is installed at your cable company's headend (the place where your television signals originate). This computer receives updated information from TWC, and then inserts your local forecast over TWC's national broadcast on the 8's of each hour. For more information, visit our STAR Reference, as well as this informative Wikipedia article.

Q: What is HiRad?

A: HiRAD is a technology that allows TWC to obtain weather reports for far more localized locations. For example, where conditions may once have been for an area as broad as a city, they now are for an area as small as your town, or even a location within your town.

Q: What is TWC HD?

A: TWC HD is The Weather Channel's new HD channel. It is currently available on many, but not all, cable systems. It should be noted that it is not yet in true HD. Rather, it is upconverted HD. What this means is that TWC is taking their SD (standard definition) signal and converting it to HD. The product is an HD signal, but not a true one. Starting June 2nd TWC HD will be in true HD.
